The United Nations designated 2016 the International Year of the Pulses they highlighted that Pulses are an important food crop for the food security of large proportions of populations around the world.
Pulses are the nutritionally packed edible seeds of the legume family, which includes dried beans, dried peas, chickpeas and lentils. The term “pulse” comes from the Latin word “puls,” meaning a thick soup. They have twice as much protein as other whole grains like wheat, barley or rice. There are hundreds of varieties of pulses grown throughout the world. Popular ones include all varieties of dried beans, such as kidney beans, lima beans, butter beans, broad beans, chickpeas, cowpeas, black-eyed peas and pigeon peas.
