Patient Education Our Sugar and Calorie Reduction Journey

Sugar plays an important role in our food products by providing them with, not only sweetness, but also structural properties (like in the case of ice cream). We want to ensure that we use sugar responsibly and in a manner that promotes healthy living, whilst matching technical needs and consumer preferences.

We support the position that energy intake from sugar should be limited in line with the recommendations that have been made by our planet’s most reputable health and wellness organisations (such as the World Health Organization). This is explicitly recognised in our Unilever Sustainable Living Plan targets, which has seen us make massive strides over the last 16 years by optimising and reducing the amount of sugar and sweeteners that are used in our products, releasing smaller portioned versions of existing products, and ensuring that 91% of our packaged ice cream products contain 250 calories or less.
